Oklahoma Income Tax Guide: Form 511, E-File Date, Tribal Income

Updated November 1, 2026

Oklahoma taxes residents on income from all sources and has its own return, Form 511. Social Security and military pay are subtracted. Returns e-filed through a preparer or the internet get a few extra days past the federal date, if any balance is paid electronically. Nonresidents and part-year residents use Form 511-NR.

What Form 511 taxes and what it subtracts

Oklahoma taxes residents on all income reported on the federal return, with three carve-outs: income from real and tangible property located in another state, income from business activity in another state, and gains or losses from selling real property in another state. Wages earned outside Oklahoma still go on the Oklahoma return. If the other state taxes them too, you claim a credit on Form 511-TX and attach a copy of that state's return.

You find your tax in a table in the instruction packet. The packet also lists subtractions that matter to retirees and service members:

  • Social Security included in your federal income is subtracted.
  • Military retirement from any part of the armed forces is excluded in full.
  • Active military pay, including Reserve and National Guard pay, is excluded for residents. Retirement income is handled on its own line.
  • Government and other retirement. Oklahoma government retirees, federal civil service retirees and people with other qualifying plan income can exclude up to a set cap. The two exclusions share one cap. An early distribution tied to leaving a job does not qualify for the government-retiree exclusion.
  • Railroad retirement benefits in your federal income may be excluded.

The due date, the e-file extra days and extensions

Your Oklahoma return is generally due the same day as the federal return, April 15. The packet adds a twist. If you e-file through a preparer or the internet, the due date moves to April 20. Any balance owed on April 20 must be paid electronically. If you e-file but pay another way, penalty and interest run from the original date. Check the packet for this year's dates. If the IRS sets a later disaster date, Oklahoma accepts it, and you write the disaster designation at the top of the return.

A valid federal extension also extends the Oklahoma date if you owe no Oklahoma tax. Attach a copy. If you did not extend the federal return, or you owe Oklahoma tax, ask for more time on Form 504-I and file Form 511 later. Most of the tax must still be paid by the original date to avoid a late-payment penalty, and interest runs from that date. For the federal request, see our extension guide.

The Tax Commission runs OkTAP, its free online service, where you can file, pay, make estimated payments and check a refund.

Tribal income, depletion and credits only Oklahoma has

  • Exempt tribal income. If a tribal member's principal home is in Indian Country within the jurisdiction of that member's tribe, the income may be deducted. You must prove it. The packet asks for a tribal membership card covering the whole year, a trust deed or similar paper showing the home sits on allotted, restricted or trust land, and records showing where you worked.
  • Oil and gas depletion. You may choose Oklahoma depletion, figured on a set share of gross income from each Oklahoma property, minus the federal depletion you claimed. You must send a detailed schedule by property.
  • Sales tax relief credit. You must be a resident for the whole year, and Form 538-S is part of the return. Household income must stay under a cap that rises if you claim a dependent, are older, or have a qualifying disability. An extension covers this credit too.
  • Use tax. If you bought items for use in Oklahoma from sellers who did not collect Oklahoma sales tax, you owe use tax. For smaller purchases, the packet offers a use tax table based on income to estimate the amount.

Residency, nonresidents and military families

Oklahoma calls you a resident if you were domiciled here for the whole year. Domicile means your true, fixed and permanent home, the place you intend to come back to. A part-year resident was domiciled here for less than a full year. A nonresident was not domiciled here at any point.

Nonresidents and part-year residents file Form 511-NR. Oklahoma first figures the tax as if all your income were earned in Oklahoma, then prorates it by the share that came from Oklahoma sources. A nonresident with a small amount of Oklahoma-source gross income must file. The packet gives the dollar floor.

Military residency follows the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. An Oklahoma resident who enters service stays a resident until they set up a permanent home elsewhere and change military records on Form DD2058. A civilian spouse may keep the servicemember's legal residence, and in a year of marriage the couple can choose the servicemember's home, the spouse's home or the duty station. A nonresident spouse who is here to be with a servicemember on orders, and shares that domicile, may be exempt on wages earned here. To claim it, send the military W-2, the spouse's W-2, the leave and earnings statement and the federal and home-state returns. Our veteran tax benefits overview covers the federal rules.

Moving to or from Florida

The packet says a domicile, once established, stays until you adopt a new one. Moving out of Oklahoma for Florida makes the move year a part-year Oklahoma year only after you truly set up a new permanent home. Until then, Oklahoma can still treat you as a resident. Keep the dates and proof, such as a lease, a closing statement and the date you changed your driver's license.

If you earn Oklahoma income after you leave, such as rental income, you may still owe on it through Form 511-NR. If the new home is in Florida, our moving to Florida guide picks up from here.

Paperwork Oklahoma wants and mistakes that slow refunds

  • Attach the support. Send your W-2s, 1099s and other withholding statements. If you fill out any part of Schedules 511-A to 511-I or Form 538-S, you must send those pages, or the refund is delayed.
  • Sign it. Both spouses sign a joint return.
  • Estimated payments. You make equal quarterly payments if you expect to owe a set amount beyond withholding. Pay on OkTAP or with Form OW-8-ES. Farmers with most of their income from farming have an exception.
  • Round to whole dollars. The packet says all amounts on the return and schedules are rounded.
  • Check the refund route. Direct deposit with a wrong number sends the refund back as a debit card. A debit card or paper check is also an option.
  • One year per amended return. Mark the amended box, complete Schedule 511-I and mail each year in its own envelope.

FAQ

Does Oklahoma tax Social Security?

The packet says Social Security benefits included in your federal income are subtracted on the Oklahoma return. Keep a copy of your federal return, because the Commission asks for it with that subtraction.

Why is the Oklahoma e-file date later than the federal date?

The Commission's packet says returns e-filed through a preparer or the internet get a due date of April 20. A balance owed on that date must be paid electronically, or penalty and interest run from the original date.

How do I get an extension?

A valid federal extension carries over if you owe no Oklahoma tax, and you attach a copy. Otherwise use Form 504-I. Most of the tax is still due on the original date, and interest runs from then.

Is tribal income taxed in Oklahoma?

It may be deductible if you are a tribal member whose principal home is in Indian Country within your tribe's jurisdiction. The Commission requires proof, such as a membership card and land records.

I live in another state and worked in Oklahoma. Do I file?

A nonresident with Oklahoma-source gross income above a small floor files Form 511-NR. Oklahoma computes tax on all your income, then prorates it by the Oklahoma share. Military spouses may have a separate exemption.
