Orlando FL Tax Preparation for Tipped Hospitality Workers

Updated September 26, 2026

Orlando is the Orange County seat, and tourism and hospitality is a major employer sector in Orange County. If your pay includes tips, the IRS has specific reporting steps. Zero Fuss Taxes prepares returns for hospitality workers remotely, around your shifts.

Tourism and hospitality pay is not always a simple paycheck

Orlando is the county seat of Orange County, and tourism and hospitality is a major employer sector in the county. We are not going to claim numbers about it. We only note that a person in that kind of work may have several employers over a year, irregular hours, and pay that includes tips.

That mix creates one clear need: keep good records, and get a return that reflects them. Our office is at 2941 W State Rd 434, Suite 100, in Longwood, but you can handle the whole process from your phone between shifts.

What the IRS says about tips

Employees who receive cash tips of $20 or more in a calendar month while working for one employer must report the total to that employer. The written report is due by the tenth of the following month. Under $20 a month, you do not have to tell your employer, but you still report those tips on your tax return.

Tips include what customers hand you directly, tip-sharing amounts and card tips distributed by your employer. A mandatory service charge is not a tip. It is treated as regular wages. The IRS points employees to Publication 531 for keeping a daily tip record.

The takeaway is practical: a simple daily note of tips earned, kept all year, is far easier than a guess at filing time.

Multiple jobs, multiple W-2s

If you worked for more than one employer, you will receive a W-2 from each. Send us all of them. A simple W-2 return starts at $99, and a family return starts at $299 if you support dependents.

Do you also drive, deliver or take on gigs on the side? That income is reported as self-employment, and a self-employed return starts at $299. Our page on gig worker taxes explains it further.

Property and business items in Orange County

If you own your home in Orlando, the Orange County Property Appraiser handles homestead. Florida law sets March 1 as the deadline for applications. The Orange County Tax Collector mails property tax bills by November 1, with 4 percent off for payment in November, dropping to 1 percent in February, and full payment due March 31.

If you have a small business, the same tax collector offers business tax receipts, new and renewal, through its BTExpress portal.

Filing on your schedule

  1. Fill out the intake on your phone.
  2. Get a free quote that lists e-file and processing fees.
  3. Upload W-2s, tip records and other forms in photos.
  4. Review the draft when your shift ends.
  5. Sign electronically. We e-file.

We do not need you in Longwood, and we never base fees on refund size.

Tip records that actually get kept

The best tip log is the one you will really use. Try a note on your phone with one line per shift. Write the date, employer, cash tips, card tips and any amount you shared with coworkers. Add up the month on the last day and compare it with the number your employer's system shows.

Why bother? The IRS treats direct customer tips, shared tips and distributed card tips as tips that must be reported. A clean log makes the monthly report to your employer quick, and it gives us numbers we can trust when we prepare your return. If a pay stub looks off, you will have your own record to compare it with.

Send it while it is fresh

Hospitality schedules are unpredictable, so do not wait for a free week. Send your W-2 the day it arrives. Send tip totals as photos of your notes. If you are not sure something matters, send it anyway and we will sort it out.

Gather these

  • Every W-2 from every employer.
  • Your daily tip log or the tip totals you reported to employers.
  • Any 1099 forms for gig or contract work.
  • ID and Social Security numbers for the household.
  • Childcare and dependent details, if any.
  • Direct deposit routing and account numbers.

We prepare returns only. We are not a CPA firm and cannot represent you before the IRS.

Ask about how multiple W-2s are combined, and we will walk through it with you before quoting the return.

Orlando shift workers can send documents at any hour.

FAQ

Do I owe tax on cash tips?

The IRS says tips must be reported, including cash tips under $20 a month, which go directly on your return.

Is a service charge the same as a tip?

No. The IRS treats a mandatory service charge as regular wages, not a tip.

What if I lost my W-2?

Tell us the employer and we will explain how to request another copy.

Can you file if I worked at two places?

Yes. Send both W-2s and we combine them on one return.
