Orlando Self-Employed Tax Guide: What Still Applies in FL
Updated October 6, 2026
What Florida's missing income tax does for you
The Florida Department of Revenue says the state does not impose a personal income tax, so there are no filing requirements for one. State law points back to a constitutional mandate that no income tax be levied on natural persons who are residents and citizens of Florida. For you, that means no state income tax return and no state estimated payments on your business profit.
Florida does tax some corporations, a separate subject covered in our Florida corporate income tax guide. If you work as a sole proprietor, or through a one-owner LLC that the IRS treats as part of you by default, you report on your own return and that corporate tax is not your concern.
One caution. Work for clients in another state can bring that state's rules into play, so read how multi-state income works before you assume Florida's rules cover everything.
The federal bills that follow you to Orlando
Dropping the state layer leaves the federal layer untouched. A self-employed person in Orlando owes the same federal taxes as one anywhere else.
- Income tax on net profit, reported on Schedule C and carried to your Form 1040. Our Schedule C walkthrough explains each part.
- Self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare. The IRS puts the rate at 15.3%, made up of 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare. It applies to net profit, not to total sales.
- A half deduction. You can deduct half of the self-employment tax when figuring adjusted gross income.
The trigger is low. Once your net earnings from self-employment reach $400 for the year, the tax applies, even when the work is a side gig next to a W-2 job. Net earnings means what is left after business costs, which is why records matter. The self-employment tax guide works through sample numbers.

Estimated payments from an Orlando address
Clients usually do not withhold tax from what they pay you, so the IRS expects you to pay during the year. People generally have to make estimated payments when they expect to owe $1,000 or more at filing, after withholding and credits. Florida adds nothing here. Your estimated payments are federal only.
The 2026 payments fall on April 15, June 15 and September 15 of 2026, then January 15, 2027. By early October, three of the four are behind you, and the last one for 2026 is the January 15 payment. If you skipped one, pay what you can now. The penalty is figured on how much you were short and how long it stayed unpaid, so catching up sooner costs less.
The January 15 payment guide covers the safe harbor tests, and the estimated tax overview covers the whole year.
Your business tax receipt: city and county
This is the local layer, and it is where Orlando works differently from a place with one office. A business tax receipt is a yearly local tax for the privilege of doing business. Florida law lets both counties and cities charge it, and the local government issues it, not the IRS.
- Inside the City of Orlando: the City says all businesses must register with its business tax office regardless of size, and home-based businesses need a receipt too, with extra home occupation requirements. It also says you need both a city and a county receipt, so you get the City's first and then the one from the Orange County Tax Collector.
- Outside city limits, in unincorporated Orange County: the county zoning office reviews a new business first, and then the Tax Collector issues the receipt.
- Certificate of Use: the City requires one alongside the receipt for most businesses, to confirm the business is allowed in its zoning district.
The City's checklist begins with a step that is easy to skip: confirm your address is inside Orlando city limits. Several other Orange County cities issue their own receipts as well, so check the one that covers your address.
Receipts expire September 30 each year. A late renewal draws a 10% penalty for October, plus 5% more for each month after, up to 25%. If yours has not been renewed since September, deal with it now. The business tax receipt guide also covers Seminole County.
Other Florida items to settle before you invoice
- Your business name. If you work under a name other than your own legal name, Florida law says to register that fictitious name with the Division of Corporations first. The City's receipt checklist also lists registering the name on Sunbiz.
- Sales tax. If you will sell taxable goods or services, the Department of Revenue says to register as a sales and use tax dealer before you begin. See Florida sales tax basics.
- Your records. Current books are what turn all of this into a clean return. Monthly bookkeeping is an option if you would rather hand that off.
Who this fits and what to gather
This guide fits Orlando-area freelancers, gig drivers, independent contractors, stylists, cleaners and anyone else paid on a 1099 or in cash by customers. A self-employed return with us starts at $450. The final fee comes from a written quote, plus e-file and processing fees, and it is never based on your refund. Try the quote calculator or see pricing.
Bring these to your preparer:
- Every 1099-NEC, 1099-K and 1099-MISC you received, plus a note of cash income
- Income and expense totals, or your bookkeeping reports
- A mileage log and home office details, if they apply
- The dates and amounts of any federal estimated payments you made
- Your business tax receipt, name registration and EIN letter, if you have them
- Last year's return
Everything happens remotely, so you can start your return from home. The self-employed service page shows how it works, and the Orlando page has local details.
FAQ
Do I file a Florida income tax return if I am self-employed?
No. Florida has no personal income tax, so there is no state return for your business profit. You file a federal return with Schedule C and Schedule SE. If you also earned money in another state, ask whether that state has its own filing rules.
Do I need an Orlando business tax receipt if I work from home?
The City of Orlando says home-based businesses need a receipt and may face extra home occupation requirements. Inside city limits you also need the Orange County receipt. Contact the issuing office to confirm what applies to your address.
Do I pay self-employment tax if I also have a W-2 job?
Yes, once your net self-employment earnings for the year reach $400. Your employer already withholds Social Security and Medicare from your wages. The self-employment tax applies to the business profit on top of that.
What if I missed an estimated payment?
Make it as soon as you can. The IRS penalty is based on how much you were short and for how long. We prepare returns and do not represent taxpayers before the IRS, so if a notice arrives that you cannot resolve, speak with a qualified professional who does representation.
