How to Read a 1099-NEC: Every Box in Plain English

Updated October 23, 2026

A 1099-NEC reports money a business paid you for work as a non-employee. The main number is in Box 1. It is income you report on your return even if no tax was taken out, and you should check it against your own records.

What a 1099-NEC is

The 1099-NEC is a form a business sends you when it paid you for services but you were not its employee. Think of freelancers, contractors and consultants. The letters stand for non-employee compensation.

A copy also goes to the IRS, so the number needs to match what you report. If it does not match your records, sort it out before you file.

Think of it as a receipt for your work, issued by your client. It tells you and the IRS what they say they paid, and it is your job to make sure your own records agree.

The identification boxes at the top

The top of the form lists the payer, the person or business that paid you, and you, the recipient. Check your name, address and taxpayer identification number carefully. A mistake in your name or number can cause trouble later.

Also check the payer's name. You will want it for your own records, and to match the income to the right client.

Box 1: the income amount

Box 1 shows the total the payer reports paying you for the year. It is the number most people care about. It generally flows to the self-employment schedule on your return, where you can subtract your business expenses to find your profit.

Remember that the amount in Box 1 is not your profit. It is gross income before any expenses.

Other boxes you may see

  • Box 4 shows any federal income tax the payer withheld. It is uncommon for this type of income, but if there is an amount, it counts as a payment toward your tax.
  • State boxes show any state tax withheld and the payer's state number.

If a box has something you do not understand, ask the payer or your preparer before you file.

What to do when the numbers do not match

Compare Box 1 to your own invoices and deposits. Common reasons for a difference: a payment made in a different year, a reimbursement counted as income, or a simple error by the payer. If the form is wrong, ask the payer for a corrected one. Do not ignore it. Keep a record of what you asked and when.

If you did not get a form at all, you still need to report the income. Use your own records.

What to do next

Add the 1099-NEC to your tax folder, together with your other income records. Track your business expenses so you pay tax on profit, not gross income. Self-employed people usually need to pay tax during the year as well, which our estimated taxes guide covers. The self-employed checklist lists what to gather. Common mistakes people make with a 1099-NEC

A few errors come up again and again. The first is treating Box 1 as profit and paying tax on the whole number, which overpays. The second is the opposite: forgetting the income because no tax was withheld. A third is ignoring a form that arrives late, or one that is wrong, instead of asking the payer to fix it.

Another is mixing up this form with a W-2. A W-2 means you were an employee, and your employer handled withholding. A 1099-NEC means you are responsible for your own tax. If you got a 1099-NEC but believe you were really treated like an employee, mention it to your preparer so it can be looked at carefully. Keep every form and email related to the payment in your records.

FAQ

Do I have to report income if I did not get a 1099-NEC?

Yes. Income is reportable whether or not a form arrives. Use your own invoices and deposit records.

Is the amount in Box 1 my profit?

No. It is gross income before expenses. Your profit is what remains after you subtract your allowable business costs.

What if the payer made a mistake?

Ask the payer for a corrected form and keep a record of your request. Do not file with a number you know is wrong.

Does no tax withheld mean I owe nothing?

No. Without withholding, you are generally responsible for paying the tax yourself during the year and when you file.

Can I get more than one 1099-NEC?

Yes. Each client that paid you enough to trigger a form may send one. Add them all together, and also include income from any client that did not send a form, using your own records.
