Back Taxes and Unfiled Returns

Unfiled returns accumulate penalties fast. The IRS also has the option to file a Substitute for Return on your behalf, which rarely favors the taxpayer. Our office reconstructs missing returns year by year, files them in the right order, and helps you understand what options exist for the balance owed.

Year-by-year catch-up

We prepare each missing year in sequence, starting with the oldest, so you get back into compliance in the correct order.

Penalty review

Failure-to-file and failure-to-pay penalties can sometimes be reduced. We review the timeline and note what options may apply to your account.

IRS transcript pull

If you have missing records, we can help you request transcripts from the IRS to reconstruct income and withholding.

How the process works

  1. You start the intake form or call our office. Tell us which years are missing.
  2. Our office requests a document checklist matched to each year.
  3. We prepare each year, send you a draft to review, and file with your signature.
  4. Once all years are filed, we note any balance and discuss payment options that exist.

We do not negotiate with the IRS on your behalf. If a formal resolution arrangement is needed, we can refer you to a licensed tax resolution professional after your returns are filed and current.

Common questions

How many years back do I need to file?

The IRS typically expects the last 6 years of unfiled returns to be filed to be considered in compliance. The exact number depends on your situation. Our office reviews and advises before any returns are prepared.

Can you file returns when I have no records?

Often yes. IRS transcripts show wages reported by employers and 1099 income reported by payers. We use those to reconstruct missing years when original records are unavailable.

Will filing old returns trigger an audit?

Filing voluntarily is always better than the IRS filing a Substitute for Return. Voluntarily filing late returns is a sign of good faith, not a red flag for examination.

What is the price for back-year returns?

Each year is treated as a separate return and quoted individually. You receive one written quote per year before any work begins.
