What the 21-day timeline means

Day 0 to 2

Return received

The IRS confirms receipt. e-File usually shows within 24 to 48 hours. Paper takes weeks.

Day 2 to 14

Return being processed

IRS systems verify your identity, math, credits, and withholding. Most returns clear this stage in under two weeks.

Day 14 to 21

Refund approved

A direct-deposit date appears. If you chose paper check, add 5 to 10 mail days.

Day 21+

Refund sent

Direct deposit usually lands within 1 to 5 business days of the deposit date.

When to worry. If the IRS tool still says "received" after 21 days for e-filed or 6 weeks for paper, call our office at 689-331-5723. Common causes: identity verification (Letter 5071C), math correction, refund offset, or EITC/ACTC PATH Act hold (refunds with these credits are held until mid-February by law).
What our office can do. If the IRS asks for ID verification or sends a Letter 12C, our office can help you respond fast. Bring the letter through our notice uploader.
